Coverholder at Lloyd's

Nowadays Lloyd’s still is the market for individual and direct contact characterised by dynamicity and novelty. Like any market, it forms a meeting place for the people who want to sell something - meaning underwriters, gathered in syndicates, offering insurance cover and those who intend to buy something – clients, looking for such cover via brokers – Lloyd’s representatives. The diversity of managing companies running business on this market, supported by the capital from a variety of sources worldwide comprises the source of Lloyd’s power.

Unlike most insurers, Lloyd’s does not have the status of a company, it is a market where Lloyd’s members, gathered in syndicates, operate. Collectively Lloyd’s syndicates constitute the largest specialised insurance and reinsurance market worldwide. According to the data of 31 December 2009, Lloyd’s market included 52 managing companies and 84 syndicates with a total written premium amounting to GBP 22 billion. However, the volume of the market is not of such importance as the breadth and depth of professional knowledge and expertise of brokers and underwriters gathered under Lloyd’s roof. This is why Lloyd’s frequently is the first to insure new, unique and complex types of risk. The oceans and other natural obstacles or country borders are not a barrier for risk - and hence for Lloyd’s market. Worldwide scope goes hand in hand with local knowledge.

Lloyd’s runs businesses in more than 200 countries. It owns 80 licences that, together with the network of local representatives, enable access to the wide range of insurance markets from the smallest to the biggest ones.

Lloyd’s recently is also present in the territory of Poland via its branch Lloyd’s Polska sp. z o.o. Together with the emerging network of coverholders (such as CEU sp. z o.o.) it will create in the future the entire structure of Lloyd’s branch in the Polish market.
